What Is Compressed Sofa | Muzhan Furniture
Share
Compressed sofas, also known as sofa in a box, are a type of sofa. As the name suggests, they are sofas that have been vacuum compressed and rolled into a package. The advantages of this type of product are obvious: they are compact, easy to transport, and have low logistics and production costs, making them a very affordable option.

In this article, I will explain "what a vacuum compression sofa is" from the following perspectives.
- The Emergence of Compressed Sofa
- Types of Compressed Sofa
- Considerations When Buying Compress Sofa
- Current Status and Future of Compressed Sofa China
Currently, there are five major furniture production regions in China, and this analysis is based on the largest and best furniture market Foshan area (Shunde China furniture wholesale market).
1.The Emergence of Compressed Sofas
Compressible sofa first appeared in 2022, inspired by compressed mattresses. They quickly gained popularity worldwide through short video platforms, with numerous introduction videos on TikTok and Instagram (@ raymond compressed sofa). The year 2024 marks a rapid development phase for compression sofas, with many being exported to various countries.

2.Types of Compressed Sofas
- Spring-Equipped Compression Sofas: These operate on the same principle as compressed mattresses. Theoretically, only one Manufacturer in mainland China can produce them, as it holds the patent. However, there are other factories secretly manufacturing them. The advantages include excellent support, greater softness compared to fully foam sofas, and no need for assembly. The downsides are that they use both springs and high-density foam, and there are few factories capable of producing them, which makes them relatively expensive.
- Fully High Density Compressed Foam Sofa: This is the most common and cost-effective type. The advantages are that they use a single material, are inexpensive, and don’t require assembly. The disadvantages include a lack of internal framework or spring support, resulting in insufficient support. To address this, softer foam is typically used, with a density of 38-45. The good news is that the foam becomes slightly softer after compression.

- Compression Sofas with Legs or Bases: The advantage of these sofas is that once legs or bases are added, they do not need to touch the ground directly, allowing placement in semi-dry outdoor spaces. The downside is that customers need to assemble them themselves, and since the base cannot be compressed or rolled, the overall packaging is larger.

3.Considerations When Buying Compress Sofa
- Due to certain limitations, not all designs are suitable for compression, resulting in a limited selection of styles—currently, there are fewer than 20 designs available. However, some factories have begun to create unique styles and apply for patents, aiming to enrich the variety while balancing aesthetics and functionality.
- Compression sofas do not use genuine leather, as it cannot be compressed. We strongly recommend using fabrics with wrinkle-resistant features.
- Foam containing flame retardants cannot be compressed (it cannot return to its original state after compression), so compressed sofas cannot use flame-retardant foam. This is unfortunate for countries with import regulations requiring flame-retardant foam (such as the UK). The good news is that while flame-retardant foam cannot be used, flame-retardant fabrics can still be employed.
- In addition to flame-retardant fabrics, waterproof fabrics can also be used, allowing compressed sofas to be placed in semi-outdoor areas such as balconies, gardens, or even by the pool. It’s important to note that the waterproof feature is merely a coating on the fabric's surface. Due to daily contact and friction, this waterproof layer will gradually wear off over time, losing its effectiveness (typically within 3-5 years).
4.Current Status and Future of Compressed Sofa China
Due to the simple manufacturing process, almost any factory capable of producing traditional sofas can also produce compressed sofas. Their ability to significantly reduce transportation costs has made them increasingly popular among buyers, leading to a growing number of factories producing this type of sofa. Looking ahead, compressed sofas are expected to become more commonplace, and in the future, you might find them in furniture stores near your home. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for that day; you can easily own one now by clicking on our page to view compressed sofas available for global delivery.
