High Density Foam for Compressed Sofa: Benefits and Best Options

In the realm of common indoor sofas, foams with a density of 35D to 45D are the most commonly used materials for seating. When you remove the cover of a sofa, you'll find that the seat cushions are made from several layers of foam with different densities. How should these varying foam densities be combined to achieve the most comfortable seating experience? There is no one-size-fits-all answer, as each factory has its own "formula". In this article, we will explain what high density foam is and discuss the type of high density foam used in our compressed sofas.

1.What Is High Density Foam?

High density foam refers to foam material with a relatively high density. Density refers to the mass per unit volume, typically measured in kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³). In foam materials, high density means that the foam is heavier per unit volume, typically above 40 kg/m³ (40D). The higher the density, the stronger the foam's firmness and support. Different density values, such as 30D, 40D, or 50D, indicate varying levels of density, which directly affect the foam's firmness, comfort, and durability.

2.What Type of High Density Foam Is Used for Compressed Sofas?

In a previous article, I briefly outlined the types and features of compressed sofas. By now, you should understand the unique characteristics that set compressed sofas apart from regular sofas. So, what type of high density couch foam is used in compressed sofas?

-Better Durability
Compared to low density foam, high density foam is more durable and has a longer lifespan. It can withstand prolonged pressure without easily losing its shape. Therefore, furniture that is used frequently, such as sofas and mattresses, is more suited to high-density foam. A high-density foam is typically defined as having a density greater than 40 kg/m³ (40D).

-Moderate Firmness and Support
Since compressed sofas do not have a frame (also for special needs), they require foam with a certain level of firmness to provide support while also ensuring comfort. High-density foam offers better support and firmness compared to low-density foam, but it is not as rigid as even higher-density foams (such as 50D or 60D). Through testing, we've found a balanced combination: using 40D foam as the base layer and 36D foam as the top layer strikes a good balance between support and comfort. This combination provides excellent support without feeling too firm.

-Comfort
Despite its higher density, 40D foam can still offer a relatively comfortable seating and lying experience. Its strong support helps alleviate pressure points without feeling excessively firm. More importantly, through vacuum compression, the foam becomes softer, making the sofa more suitable for users who prefer a medium-firm feel after decompressing.

-Compression Resistance
Our compressed sofas undergo long-term compression tests. Even after being compressed for 12 months, they do not lose their shape when decompressed. 40D foam has excellent compression resistance, maintaining its shape and stability without sagging under prolonged pressure. This makes it ideal for environments where the sofa will be used for long periods of sitting or lying.

Vacuum compressed sofa need to balance both support and comfort, and 40D high-density foam provides moderate firmness and excellent compression resistance, making it ideal for long-term use while maintaining comfort. If you want a sofa that is neither too soft nor too firm, our compressed sofa is the perfect choice.
